ABOUT US
My name is Petra Mestrom. I am the inventor of the Greenscreenbox. After having been a teacher in primary school for quite some years, I worked as an IT coordinator at a school. In 2017, I took a meta-school job as an i-Coach at SALTO in Eindhoven.
As an i-Coach, I encountered greenscreen technology and was intrigued by its numerous possibilities. However, the screens were so inconveniently large! I devised a solution to make the technology much more user-friendly in schools or after-school care settings.
After a solo start, team members quickly joined, whom we would also like to introduce to you on this page.

How it all started
The development of the Greenscreenbox originated from my drive to improve and innovate. I observed that green screens in education were not used a lot, because of the hassle it is to set everything up and because quite some space is needed. I knew I could find a way to do this differently. I first started with a hand-made cardboard version, which I tried at some schools. Both teachers and children got enthusiastic about this. Not only schools were enthusiastic. It did not take long before the first orders from day care centers came in.
As a next step, together with Fablab Midden-Limburg and my husband, I improved my design into a better and more durable version. We had months of pilots and further development, which I enjoyed tremendously. Nowadays, the Greenscreenbox is produced by a factory.
It soon became apparent that only the Greenscreenbox wasn’t sufficient as a solution. Lessons were needed to show teachers how the Greenscreenbox could be used in class. Various lessons are now available, and new lessons are continually being added.
Additionally, software was needed that is user-friendly, available on various devices, and capable of producing excellent greenscreen recordings. Therefore, in July 2023, we launched the Greenscreenbox App.

NOMINATION
Not only in 2020, right after the product launch in the Dutch market, also in 2022, the Greenscreenbox was nominated for an IPON awards. This time in the category ‘Innovation for learning – PO’.
The jury report:
“When working with green screen technology, you work on various skills such as basic ICT skills, media literacy and creative thinking. But painting a wall green, collecting green clothes and props and keeping the space free, stops many schools from using this technology. The Greenscreenbox is a green table screen that can be used to replace backgrounds of photos and videos to create a completely different world. A nice and practical way to apply working with green screen apps in education. Besides the fact that it is a compact way to get started with a green screen, the jury also liked the projects written for different groups in primary education. Together with the toolbox, green cubes and strips that allow objects and puppets to “float”, makes it possible to speak of a Greenscreenbox 2.0.”

AWARDS
The Greenscreenbox recently received the Best Innovation Award! This was awarded at the Eindhoven Maker Faire 2021 and showcases recognition for my work on the Greenscreenbox. The Eindhoven Maker Faire is an international exposition of ‘makers’ for the hybrid world of tomorrow. A professional judging committee chose the most promising and innovative makers and products. The theme of 2021’s edition of the Maker Faire was ‘new reality’.
NOMINATION
In 2020 the Greenscreenbox was nominated for the IPON startup award. For many years, the IPON exposition has been a source of information and inspiration for anyone involved in education who wants to stay informed on education innovation and ICT-applications and services. The goal of IPON is to present the newest developments in education to professionals in an innovative and creative way.
According to the judging committee: ‘The Greenscreenbox is a smart system to get started with greenscreen in easily accessible way’.
Fablab Midden-Limburg
The Greenscreenbox was developed partly in cooperation with Fablab Midden-Limburg. Kees and Willy Maas, and Tijmen Tavenier worked on the realization and design of the product. This is one of the pillars of the Fablab: to aid people in translating their ideas to a complete product.
After this initial launch with the Fablab, the Greenscreenbox was further developed in a factory. The design was enhanced, and the production capacity was significantly increased.
